Built In 1875 by B F Sturtevant, as a wedding gift to his daughter Lilla and her new husband Eugene Foss, this Sumner Hill mansion was crafted with exquisite architectural detail. While the home largely remained intact, it was chopped up into three apartments and had fallen into disrepair. Prior to bringing the interior down to the studs, fireplaces, 7′ mahogany doors, decorative tile, wainscoting, newels and stained-glass windows were surgically removed. Three new condominium units were created, as well as garage parking in the basement. Greater liberty was taken with the third floor and attic space, as the servants’ quarters had very little detail worth saving. Eugene Foss would go on to become Governor of Massachusetts in 1910. One hundred and ten years later, his old mansion would be reborn with all the original details put back in place.
